Differences in Specs

Each of the upcoming devices has different things under the hood. For the 7 inch variant we are looking at a 1.2 GHz Dual core Marvell chip, for the 8 inch version we are looking at a 1.5 GHz Exynos CPU, and finally for the 10.1 inch version of the series we are looking at a 1.6 GHz dual core chip. The 7 inch version of the series of tablets sports a 1024x600 display while the other ones both have a 1280x800 resolution.

Appearance & Android Version

Despite the differences on what is actually under the hood on the different devices, all of them look like Samsung products and are instantly recognizable as such. The 7 inch tablet will be running Android 4.1 whilst the other two will come running with Android 4.2.

Availability

If you are in the United States you can now pre order your Galaxy Tab 3 devices online at Samsung's own store or at other online retailers such as Amazon and BestBuy now, or if you prefer you can also pre order the devices at actual brick and mortar stores too.
What do you think of the specs that the new Galaxy devices are coming with and will you be buying one of these soon?

BlackBerry shares plunge more than 28% on poor earnings report

BlackBerry shares plunge more than 28% on poor earnings report
TORONTO — Shares of BlackBerry plunged more than 28 per cent in early trading after the smartphone maker's latest results fell short of analyst expectations and it warned that further losses were likely to come next quarter.
The Waterloo, Ont.-based company posted a first-quarter loss of US$84 million, 16 cents per share for the three months ended June 1, improved from a loss of $518 million or 99 cents per share a year ago.
But the adjusted loss from continuing operations was $67 million, or 13 cents per share, deeper than predictions of six cents per share profit, according to a poll of analysts by Thomson Reuters.
The company's shares fell $4.24 to $10.81 shortly after trading began on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
BlackBerry also said it has scrapped plans to offer an operating system update to its PlayBook tablet, signalling that the company plans to eventually clear the sales flop from its products entirely.
Missing from the results were specific sales figures for its new smartphone models, and subscribers fell by 4 million to 72 million, though the company says it will no longer provide them because they don't accurately reflect its business model.
The company says it shipped 6.8 million phones in the quarter a 13 per cent increase from a quarter earlier when its BlackBerry Z10 touchscreen phone sales were just getting underway.Revenue increased to $3.07 billion, up from $2.81 billion a year ago.
“During the first quarter, we continued to focus our efforts on the global roll out of the BlackBerry 10 platform,” chief executive Thorsten Heins said in a release.
The results were particularly weak in Latin America where the company says “foreign currency restrictions” in Venezuela negatively affected service revenues by $72 million.
Heins said he expects BlackBerry will book an operating loss in its second-quarter earnings results, due to heightened competition in the smartphone industry.
“The company will also continue to implement the cost savings and process-improving initiatives it started last year,” he added.

Sony Xperia Z Ultra takes on the Galaxy Note with insanely large 6.4-inch display

xperia z ultra

For good or ill, the oversized smartphone trend shows no signs of abating. In fact, Sony's just taken it to the next level with the Xperia Z Ultra — a new smartphone with a simply monstrous 6.4-inch, 1080p screen. Despite the huge panel and respectable 3,000mAh battery (which it surely needs to power that massive screen), the phone is also extremely thin at only 6.5mm and weighs 212 grams. That's thinner than the iPhone 5, but also twice as heavy — we'll have to see how these dimensions feel when you're holding Sony's supersized phone. Other noteworthy features include a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor clocked at 2.2GHz, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of storage plus a microSD slot, Android 4.2, and an 8-megapixel camera
.

LG G2 caught in leaked slides: super-thin body with volume keys on the back

LG G2 caught in leaked slides

Some time ago we’ve told you that the forthcoming LG Optimus G2 (or that’s just G2) may be so thin that LG has opted to put its buttons on the back of the phone. Well, now we know that rumor had some merit as you can see from the few images here.
The G2 will be one of the thinnest phones around, perhaps even thinner than the Huawei Ascend P6. Moreover, it will also have super-powerful guts that include Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 800 quad-core processor coupled with 2GB of RAM. Plus let’s not forget its 5-inch full HD screen and a 13-megapixel camera on the back. Flexible display will have to wait for some G3, though…
Check out the few slides from LG’s presentation that was leaked to the Interwebs, compliments to the ever-savvy EVleaks. Hopefully, the Korean company will officially launch its new flagship device on August 7th. Can’t wait. :)

Google Updates Local Search Results On Desktop With Carousel Design

carousel

At the end of last year, Google introduced a new design for some local search results on tablets that put a carousel with the top results at the top of the page. Today, it’s bringing this design to the desktop, too. This new feature can be triggered by searches for restaurants, bars and other local places, Google says, and it’s currently rolling out in English in the U.S. and should roll out for other languages in the future.
A typical search to see this feature would be something like “Mexican restaurants in nyc.” Google will then put the carousel at the top of the page, including a photo, the standard Zagat ratings, price class and cuisine. A click on these places will bring up their Google+ Local sites with more information.
Users can click on an arrow in the right to see more places and they can use the map in the sidebar to zoom in and the carousel will automatically restrict your searches to this specific area.
Google, of course, also uses a similar design for some of its Knowledge Graph results. As a number of bloggers noticed recently, these Knowledge Graph carousel results seem to be popping up more frequently now than ever before. Given today’s addition of the local search carousel, chances are that Google’s stats show that this is a very effective way of presenting search results. I wouldn’t be surprised if the company continued to expand its use of this design element for other kinds of queries in the near future.

Huawei 'open-minded' on Nokia acquisition, chairman calls Windows Phone 'weak' (update)

Huawei (STOCK)A Nokia Lumia smartphone brought to you by Huawei? The idea might seem preposterous, but Richard Yu — chairman of the Chinese manufacturer's consumer business unit — says his company is "considering" such acquisitions. "Maybe the combination has some synergies," Yu told The Financial Times. Of course, he quickly clarified that any deal hinges on Nokia's willingness to be bought out. "We are open-minded," Yu said. Nokia's stock jumped upward as news of the executive's unprompted remarks spread. The struggling handset maker has given no indication it's for sale, however. In fact, Nokia is in the midst of a significant hardware push, having just released the Lumia 925 and Lumia 928; an "EOS" Windows Phone featuring a 41-megapixel camera is also reportedly in the pipe.
Still, Yu suggests Nokia shouldn't be dismissive of a potential buyout. "Whether Windows Phone [will be] successful is hard to say," he said, going on to describe the third-place OS as "weak." One likely reason for this, the chairman suggested, is the fee associated with licensing Microsoft's Windows Phone software, highlighting out Android's "free" nature as a significant differentiator between the two.
Update: Huawei has told Reuters that it "has no plans" to acquire Nokia, though the company stops short of denying it's considered the idea.

Sony's flagship Xperia Z finally arrives on a US carrier, available from T-Mobile in 'coming weeks

Xperia Z T-MobileSony's Xperia Z, the high-end, ruggedized Android phone that was announced at CES, is getting its first launch on a US carrier. The phone will be available exclusively on T-Mobile in the "coming weeks;" it will come in both black and a limited-edition purple model. The Z is Sony's latest flagship phone, and it sports a 1.5GHz quad-core Snapdragon processor, 1080p display, and a 13-megapixel Exmor RS camera that Sony touts as offering HDR video — though we found the camera underwhelming in our review. Unusually for a US phone, it comes with a water-resistant coating, something that sets an otherwise relatively ordinary device apart from comparable Android phones.
The similar Xperia ZL is already available as an unlocked phone in the US, but this is the first time we've seen the new high-end Xperia on an American carrier, though Sony's Kaz Hirai hinted at the move in May. The Xperia Z will be available on T-Mobile's installment plan, but no down payment price has been announced yet.

LG not interested in competition with Apple and Samsung on price’

Manufacturer will let rivals battle it out on price as it reveals it has no plans to release a tablet this year
‘LG not interested in competition with Apple and Samsung on price’
LG says it is happy to let Apple and Samsung battle it out in the “very high tier” for smartphone devices.
The comments came from LG UK head of mobile Andy Coughlin during the launch of the manufacturer’s new Optimus G smartphone (pictured) at Mobile World Congress.
Coughlin said LG is focused on releasing devices across all ends of the market, but will not launch devices in the same price bracket as, say, the iPhone 5 and the Galaxy S III.
He also told Mobile News LG has no plans get involved in the “distracting” tablet market this year. The firm’s last launch in this area at MWC was the LG Optimus Pad back in 2011.
Coughlin said a decision on price for the Optimus G is yet to be made, but he said it will be “nowhere near” as expensive as devices such as the Galaxy S III and iPhone 5.
No immediate decision on a UK launch for the Optimus G Pro phablet, unveiled at MWC, has been made. It will go on sale in Asia first.
Instead, Coughlin said LG’s UK focus is on its L series, with the low-end L32 (RRP £79.99) and L52 (£129.99) coming to the UK at the end of March. Mid-tier smartphones the L72 and L92, whose prices have not been announced, are coming to the UK in the summer.
“Our aim is to have the largest display at all price points,” Coughlin said.
“There is a need to be in the premium end. But the Optimus G will be nowhere near as expensive as Apple and Samsung. LG are not in the business of playing in the very high tier space.
“I can’t control what the others do, we are not in a fight with Apple and Samsung. We are not concerned with what they do.”

HTC ‘firing on all cylinders’ to reverse financial slump

Year-on-year profits down by 91.5 per cent in Q1, but Q2 expected to show improvements
HTC says it is now “firing on all cylinders” to help drive sales and boost its brand awareness.
The comments were made by HTC CEO Peter Chou (pictured), who was speaking as the manufacturer’s financial woes reached a new low, with profits dipping by 91.5 per cent year on year.
HTC ‘firing on all cylinders’ to reverse financial slump
But Chou, who was addressing the media from the company’s headquarters in Taiwan, said recent efforts to improve its marketing strategy will be key to turning its fortunes around.
In January, Chou blamed HTC’s 90 per cent decline in quarterly profits on a “lack of marketing” of its brand and products.
The company appointed Benjamin Ho as its chief marketing officer to lead a project called ‘Marketing 2.0’, refocusing HTC’s efforts around holistic marketing and mass-market brand outreach.
Chou revealed in those three months, digital marketing spend increased by 250 per cent, and there was a 100 per cent increase in traditional media marketing, focused predominantly on driving sales of the HTC One.
The device is said to have broken all previous records on pre-orders, and UK and EMEA head Philip Blair suggested last month it is on track to become HTC’s fastest-selling handset of all time, branding it “the world’s best smartphone”.
Ho also took the decision to retire its ‘quietly brilliant’ slogan after a decade.
Strong momentum
Chou said: “We are going to run a very successful campaign on the marketing side and on the sales side. So we are firing on all cylinders.
“We expect this to be a very crucial quarter, coming out strong with momentum sustaining until the third quarter.
“Brand awareness is so important for us given a lot of suppliers are coming out strong and there is no differentiation in the market. That’s why we are extremely focused on getting better brand awareness. We are doing this through design innovation of the HTC One.
“And, of course, we also know that we have to greatly improve our go-to market approach in terms of marketing, in terms of channel. We have made great improvements in terms of HTC marketing and execution.
“This is probably the first time HTC has developed an HTC brand, and we are able to really integrate the brand, product and marketing execution all together at one time.”
HTC chief financial officer Chia-Lin Chang added: “We have improved a lot. We have a very good marketing strategy as well as execution strategy to support our HTC One launch. We are pretty confident this marketing campaign will propel us to the next level.
“It’s very important once you start launching the product, to have strong momentum coming out of the gate and to sustain that. So, we believe our spending has been optimal to support sales momentum.”

President Obama expected to present greenhouse gas reduction plan on Tuesday

President Obama inaugural address

President Obama will address the nation from Georgetown University on Tuesday to share details on how he plans to address the threat of climate change, a promise he made in his inaugural address back in January. According to The Washington Postthe president will specifically announce new regulations on the country's power plants in an effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. It's an effort not only to meet the promise he made in January but also to achieve an international pledge his administration made to lower greenhouse gas levels to 17 percent below their 2005 levels. While a video released by The White House doesn't specifically address lowering greenhouse gas levels, the president's narration does say that he'll lay out "a national plan to reduce carbon pollution, prepare our country for the impacts of climate change, and lead global efforts to fight it.

Twitter’s Mobile Crash Reporting Tool Crashlytics Arrives On Android

crashlytics-android
As promised at the time of its acquisition by Twitter, mobile crash reporting tool Crashlytics has not stopped development. In February, it opened up its enterprise features to all for free, and today the company released the long-awaited solution for Android devices with the launch of the Android SDK.
Twitter’s Android engineers have been beta testing the new product, which offers a similar feature set to the iOS version, and includes things like fully automated deobfuscation, logged exceptions, condensed crash reporting, IDE integration with Eclipse, IntelliJ and Android Studio (beta) on Mac, Windows and Linux platforms – the details of which are all available here on the Crashlytics company blog announcing the SDK’s arrival.
(For non-developers, what the above means is that the tool set is really good at spotting bugs and making sense of them, and has been designed to easily integrate into a developer’s current workflow).
Crashlytics founder Wayne Chang explains that crash detection and reporting is a tough problem to solve, also noting that it’s “particularly” complex on Android. “Given the complexities of crash reporting, Android’s explosive growth, and the myriad of devices, it was important for us to build the most powerful, lightweight crash reporting solution for the Android platform,” he states in the post.
Meanwhile, Twitter’s Engineering blog offers a deeper dive into some of the challenges that Crashlytics helped them solve over the past months, ahead of it actually acquiring the service. For instance, Twitter engineers were once perplexed by crashes that were affecting a small number of users, and the Crashlytics tool set eventually helped them figure out those users were on jailbroken iOS devices.
Ben Sandofsky, Twitter’s tech lead for Twitter for Mac (previously iOS), also explained that while iTunes Connect helps with crash reports for production builds of the app, Crashlytics has been able to help the company with crash reporting for its internal “dogfood” builds – and this, in turn, helps the company reduce the feedback cycle and ship a better version for users, he says.
At the time of the acquisition, Crashlytics had already been making a name for itself among mobile app developers, including not only inside Twitter (and Twitter-owned Vine), but also with big-name brands. The company now offers services to thousands of companies, including Yelp, Kayak, PayPal, Walmart, Groupon, Waze, 500px, Yammer, Blackboard, Path, OpenTable, Domino’s, Expedia, Square and more.

HTC Reportedly Pulls The Plug On A 12-Inch Windows RT Tablet, But A Smaller Tab Lives On

Image (7) flyer-2.jpg for post 322735
HTC is currently sailing through a patch of rough seas, and it seems as though the company is starting to rethink its tablet strategy. According to a recent report from Bloomberg, HTC was planning to put together a 12-inch Windows RT tablet for release later this year before scrapping it due to cost and anemic overall demand for Windows RT.
That’s not to say that the beleaguered Taiwanese OEM is ditching Windows RT completely — there’s reportedly still a 7-inch RT tablet in the works, as well as another Android tablet. Bloomberg’s unnamed source goes on to note that demand for RT-powered tablets in general has been lackluster, so it made sense for HTC to pick its battles more carefully. After all, recent (albeit unconfirmed) Surface RT sales figures from back in March purport that Microsoft had only sold about a million units at the time — for a device meant to be the RT flagship, such numbers probably weighed heavily into the machinations of OEMs considering entering the RT fray.
Long time HTC watchers will know that focusing on a smaller number of quality devices is a tablet tactic the company has leaned on before. HTC’s recent history with tablets has been, well, pretty spotty. It’s first notable Android tablet in 2011 relied heavily on a smart stylus (a formula that Samsung would later turn into a winner) and just didn’t sell all that well, and its larger-screened followup saw similarly poor sales in the U.S. thanks to its incredibly high price tag — $699 with a contract. Clearly, things had to change.
HTC UK chief Phil Roberson said early last year that the company would be dialing back its focus on tablets, and true to his word HTC company spent much of 2012 trying to perfect its smartphone formula while facing ever-stiffer competition from rivals Samsung and Apple. Arguably the OEM has finally managed to hit its stride with the widely acclaimed One smartphone, but a single well-received device almost certainly won’t be enough to turn things around alone. It’s tough to say just how much of an impact a small Windows RT tablet will have on HTC’s flagging fortunes (I’m guessing it won’t move the needle much), but the company could use any boost it can get at this point. A quick look at HTC’s recently released fiscal Q1 2013 financials reveals a business that has definitely seen better days — it reported a mere $2.8 million in unaudited net income, down drastically from the year-ago quarter.

Ex-Contractor Is Charged in Leaks on N.S.A. Surveillance

Edward J. Snowden, the former National Security Agency contractor whose leak of agency documents has set off a national debate over the proper limits of government surveillance, has been charged with violating the Espionage Act and stealing government property for disclosing classified information to The Guardian and The Washington Post, the Justice Department said on Friday.

Each of the three charges unsealed on Friday carries a maximum prison sentence of 10 years, for a total of 30 years. But Mr. Snowden is likely to be indicted, and additional counts may well be added. In addition to the theft charge, the two charges under the Espionage Act include “unauthorized communication of national defense information” and “willful communication of classified communications intelligence information to an unauthorized person.” Communications intelligence is the technical term for eavesdropping and other electronic intercepts.
The charges were filed on June 14 by federal prosecutors in the Eastern District of Virginia, which handles many national security cases. American officials said they have asked the authorities in Hong Kong, where Mr. Snowden is believed to be in hiding, to detain him while an indictment and an extradition request are prepared. The attempt to extradite him is likely to produce a long legal battle whose outcome is uncertain. The extradition treaty between the United States and Hong Kong includes an exception for political offenses, and Mr. Snowden could argue that his prosecution is political in nature.
Hong Kong has limited autonomy, but matters involving national security and foreign policy are controlled by the Chinese government in Beijing. Regina Ip, a former Hong Kong secretary of security and a current legislator, said Saturday that Hong Kong authorities had “no choice but to comply” with an arrest warrant and that “our police will go and find Mr. Snowden.”
However, Ms. Ip said, Mr. Snowden could delay any extradition by claiming his is “a political offense,” or he could apply for asylum, “and those cases can take 10 years.”
Last week, hundreds of people turned out in the rain for a protest outside the United States Consulate in Hong Kong demanding that officials not cooperate with any American extradition request. The Global Times, a mainland newspaper controlled by the Communist Party, called an extradition of Mr. Snowden an “inconceivable option” in a recent commentary.
The charges against Mr. Snowden, first reported by The Washington Post, are the seventh case under President Obama in which a government official has been criminally charged with leaking classified information to the news media. Under all previous presidents, just three such cases have been brought.
Mr. Snowden, who turned 30 on Friday, fled to Hong Kong last month, carrying four laptops, after leaving his job at the N.S.A.’s eavesdropping station in Hawaii. He has given hundreds of highly classified documents to The Guardian, the British newspaper, which has been publishing a series of revelatory articles about American and British eavesdropping, and a smaller number to The Post.
Mr. Snowden’s disclosures have opened an unprecedented window on the details of surveillance by the N.S.A., including its compilation of logs of virtually all telephone calls in the United States and its collection of e-mails of foreigners from the major American Internet companies, including Google, Yahoo, Microsoft, Apple and Skype.
Mr. Snowden, who has said he was shocked by what he believed to be the N.S.A.’s invasion of Americans’ and foreigners’ privacy, told The Guardian that he leaked the documents because he believed the limits of surveillance should be decided not by government officials in secret but by American citizens.
American intelligence officials have said his disclosures have done serious damage to national security by giving terrorists and others information on how to evade the intelligence net.
Mr. Snowden’s supporters, including some associated with the antisecrecy organization WikiLeaks, have approached officials in Iceland on his behalf to inquire about whether he might be granted asylum there. Iceland’s Ministry of the Interior, however, said in a statement that he must be in the country to file an asylum application.
An Icelandic businessman with ties to WikiLeaks, Olafur Vignir Sigurvinsson, has told reporters that he has private aircraft on standby, prepared to fly Mr. Snowden to Iceland. But the American charges and detention request may short-circuit any attempt to reach Iceland.
Glenn Greenwald, the Guardian columnist who received most of Mr. Snowden’s leaked documents, blasted the Obama administration over the Espionage Act charges on his Twitter feed. “How is leaking to a newspaper and informing one’s fellow citizens about secret govt behavior ‘espionage’???” Mr. Greenwald wrote.
